Older Americans Act grant funds allow Oxford to help the frail elderly stay in their homes. Our homemaker program provides direct help to seniors and caregivers of seniors. Without regard of ability to pay. There is no charge for services. Donations are accepted, and go directly to providing additional services to seniors.

In 1965 Congress passed the Older Americans Act in response to the growing number of older people. The Older Americans Act has been amended several times since 1965 to develop a wide range of services and opportunities for older Americans, especially those at risk of losing their independence.

Eligibility for this program is determined by age (60 years or older) and need (physical limitations that interfere with their ability to conduct the kind of services offered).

Oxford’s Older Americans Act services are offered in Tulsa, Creek and Osage counties in northeast Oklahoma. Services include:

  • Homemaker services - light housekeeping, errands and grocery shopping.
  • Respite - staff, supervise, and assist the senior while the caregiver takes a much needed beak. There are four respite options:
    • Companion Aide - can offer companionship and supervision, can provide help with some light household tasks when approved, but they cannot provide any “hands on care” for your loved one.
    • Personal Care - Can provide personal care during the respite visit
    • Adult Day Services - You receive $400 to put toward the cost of adult day services. You can utilize the $400 at the following centers: Life Senior Services Adult Day Service, Oasis Adult Day Service, St. Simeon’s Adult Day Service
    • Respite Vouchers – You receive $400 to pay someone of your choosing to come into the home and stay with your loved one while the caregiver takes a much needed break.
  • Respite for grandparents raising grandchildren - We offer respite vouchers for grandparents left with the sole responsibility of raising their minor grandchildren. The voucher program can be used to help pay for daycare services, babysitters, or summer camp.
  • Chore - Seasonal assistance with lawn care or one time household deep cleaning projects.
  • Home Repair Services - We provide small home repairs to help with accessibility in homes owned by seniors.

Additional services offered through the Older Americans Act from other service organizations include:

  • Congregate meal sites
  • Home delivered meals (for homebound seniors)
  • Transportation assistance
  • Legal assistance for seniors
  • Caregivers education and counseling
